During this time, she was unable to provide for her family due to her illness, she says.

While Ms. Sheppard stayed at home during this time, both the mother and the grandparents moved to New Zealand because they lost their home to her illness. But Ms. Sheppard has decided to remain close to her home by staying at the home and attending to the family's business expenses, because of the high cost of living and not because of the economic downturn.

Ms. Sheppard says her business, the first-term family business, "is doing great, but for some of our employees, this is a struggle. I'm not talking about the money, the kids are in there on holiday, and my kids can't afford it. But I'm just here for them. They'll go anywhere."
