traveling europe for a month," the report said. "In June 2017, European Commission and national security officials visited the Estonian capital for a trip to help solve problems linked to the current crisis in the Eurozone." Eurozone authorities announced plans to strengthen the border control in order to stem the flow of money and other goods to the bloc, and to better monitor flows of refugees from Syria, Iraq etc.

The report also revealed that the EU was set to raise concerns with Estonia over problems with the way asylum seekers are processed in Estonia and neighbouring countries.

"A significant percentage of the large numbers (8 percent) of these asylum seekers in Estonia are from Syria or other countries within Europe" the report said. "We have been contacted by more than 10,000 Estonian nationals to identify individuals who are likely to be in Syria. This includes unaccompanied children, asylum seekers with little or no legal family and people who are vulnerable to abuse in return for their freedom to seek asylum in the community in the EU and outside Europe. This list is a snapshot of large numbers that can lead to further problems for people seeking asylum in Estonia, other Europe, or to move in or to the United States for work or other purposes. We want to make sure that the problem to which our asylum efforts are directed (including the issue of refugees that would be sent to the US) do not continue to spread to other countries."

When asked on Tuesday by German news agency DE and the Guardian why Italy didn't join the Eurozone's economic and monetary union, Lachmann suggested he was simply being unreasonable (see comments below).

"There was no real choice in the Eurozone. We decided we would never agree to give up," he told AFP, citing the need to keep the euro's value added tax, which would reduce the country's overall economic impact.

He said one of Italy's biggest rivals for a similar eurozone membership was the United States, which would also be a priority.

A possible solution may be to leave the euro entirely for now, Lachmann said, as it was "not that countries can never get into it until we join".

Italian prime minister Paolo Gentiloni, however, said last month that without an agreed national currency, it would be impossible to secure financial support for new countries that do not want to support a new euro currency.

Lachmann's comments came after Italy's Finance Minister Angelino Alfano said on Tuesday the Euro was dead after he refused to join the euro during the recent negotiations.
