A member of the Labour Party, Simon Stevens, said he was disappointed with the letter, as he felt "it is not enough to say Labour is completely broken. It is not even enough to explain to members that Labour and the Tories are not running on the same principles."

But he added that Labour was "not in a position to do anything at all now that it is being treated like a party which would give an opening to those which have opposed it through the years."
