After the bombing, many in Brussels were angry, saying the attack underscored their fears that terrorist attacks against them could lead to more bloodshed across Europe. The attack took place less than two weeks after a deadly Islamic State suicide bombing in Paris, killing 130 people, which carried out its second suicide bombing in five weeks, as the Muslim State in Syria battled to seize control of much of territory on the divided country.

Paris, a city of more than 60 million people and home to the largest French contingent in the Western world, has long been one of the most important hubs of France's political and military presence in the Middle East and North Africa.

Many of those in Brussels would not have expected the attack. The attackers' motive remains unclear. There was no reported attack there.

The attack is in contrast with how the city has treated the Paris attacks. President Fillon and Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel have met in recent days over allegations of corruption and some of the suspects have denied involvement in terrorism.
