He had been doing work on the ground in Hong Kong in his 30's and 40's when they were detained while on a mission at the top secret British base (called "Waffenkreuz") in Singapore.

On March 23, 1981, Taylor and a fellow visitor were arrested the next day. Taylor, later later known as Charlie, and his partner, a British police officer, were still in an airship when his phone was confiscated from them.

A letter from a British court official to the authorities says: "At about 8 p.m. on March 24, 1981 [Taylor], Charlie, and a couple of other police officers stopped at the base (Waffenkreuz) base in Singapore for interrogation… on the basis of questioning they were held under a search warrant for suspected 'terrorism offences'".

At the time they were not being interrogated, but the BBC reports that Taylor's wife, Angela, was reportedly under the spell of the police's interrogator, William Macleod. A lawyer for the plaintiff asked The Intercept to investigate the circumstances surrounding Angela Macleod, but the story did not go through due to the case being settled out of court.
