But there is one problem. It is not easy to locate. All airlines have a "free route" that runs between Los Angeles and New York.

"In some cases, airlines will offer free or discounted fares to those departing for an entire day," writes David Gavilha, a lecturer in economics at Washington University in St. Louis. "In some cases, there may be long queues. As a result, you might see an airline leave without a passenger. Often they have an easy to find route or choose to take part in a particular route."

In those cases, the airline might set a fare based on what time it is and on its destination.

The New York Times reports: "Even though the American carrier only offers regular, 'day-between' routes, the company still offers free and discounted fares to those arriving on its first day of business from New York." A flight to Los Angeles by any other airline "will normally cost $12 to operate."

Other routes can differ.

At least some airlines don't offer a free route that runs either to Hawaii or Los Angeles, and others don't offer discounted fares to departing cities.

Still, a common route in all destinations -- from Seattle to Miami to Boston or Toronto -- includes free flights to the Bay Area, which is where the New York Times ran its story.

And no matter where you are, no single destination provides the free
